I Am Algonquin - 26 Apr 2015
Hello my "I am Algonquin" people. I find our book super interesting and engaging. The story takes place in the forest and in the village of the Omamiwinini people. One connection that I have made to this setting is a Text to Text connection.
Ever heard of the book "Origin" by: Jessica Khoury? It's about a girl who was made in a secret lab in the middle of the Amazon Rain Forest. She was made to be immortal. She was never aloud to leave the lab's grounds because the scientists thought people would take her away once they new her powers. However Pia wanted to explore the world around her. So she snuck out and met a tribe boy named Eio. He took her to his village, and to meet his people. This setting was also in the wilderness and much like in "I am Algonquin", there is trees and rivers endlessly surrounding the villages.
I find our book very different from anything else I have ever read. For one, it is taken place in and around the year 1305, so the way the people lived was much different from now. I also love the fact that Rick Revelle added the language of the Algonquin people in the book. I find languages very interesting, and I love learning new ones. A culture needs it's language to survive. And in this book, not only are we following along with Mahingan's story but also his culture.
I also find the characters very interesting. I tagged page 15 in the book just in case I forget the meaning of their names. I love how each one is an animal. For example, Mahingan means wolf and Makwa means Bear. I am a great animal lover, and would really like to know my spirit animal. My connection with this, is I have medicine cards that are animal themed. Everyday I pull one out and find out which animal is walking with me for that day. For example, the dog is very loyal and helps stick by you when ever he is needed. It's just a fun, spiritually inclined thing I like to do.
I can't wait to hear all of your opinions on the book. Bye for now.
